Introducing – The Simple Chess Improvement Coaching Program

The three main reasons chess players stay stuck are:

- Not aware of the blind spots in their calculation and thought process;
- Not training practical thinking techniques;
- Not internalizing enough of the key patterns

Our three pillars form a method that no other chess program uses. The three steps are:

1. Feedback On Your Thought Process: Not just identifying mistakes in your games but understanding what you needed to see/appreciate to play the best move. Then adjusting your training to improve those skills - for example, doing blindfold training to hone your working memory if you're blundering material seemingly out of nowhere in complicated positions.

2. Training Thinking Techniques: Focusing on the most practical techniques. For example, asking 'what squares were left behind by the opponent's last move?', and then applying that technique with set puzzles and feedback on your thought process.

3. Mastering Pattern Recognition: Taking the top 80% of lessons from the most instructive 20% of master games. Seeing what weaknesses players of different levels have so you can develop an approach to beat them more often, and learning lessons from the variations within the games, not just the raw moves.

These three shifts – focusing on skill training over mere topics – are the fulcrum of Simple Chess Improvement.

Follow these consistently over the long-term, and you won’t just improve your chess – you’ll completely shift your performance.

The Philosophy of Simple Chess Improvement

Unlike most programs that pretend to have everything figured out forever, ‘Simple Chess Improvement’ will never be ‘finished’ – it will always be growing and evolving, with different aspects tailored to the students’ needs.

Unlike other programs that try to fit square pegs into round holes, our flexible framework and process adapts with you – not the other way around.

I literally just reworded the initial 13 video framework for the Training Plan into 39 modules – because one can always go deeper. As you grow, the training grows with you.

Later this month I’ll be conducting the first High Performance Coaching session in the program – where we’ll go beyond the basic format from this email to give you practical techniques for generating more energy, meaning, direction, focus and impact in your life. And tailored questions to guide you toward developing solutions to the main challenges you’re facing right now.

We provide the framework and process – all that’s needed from you is your full engagement to allow the answers to flow from within. We’re here with you through every step of that transformation – to empathize through the inevitable struggles and cheer you on in your progress and eventual triumphs.

Your future self will thank you for getting in before Simple Chess Improvement became super cool.

The Program Structure

For those wondering about the program structure, it’s pretty simple:

- Community (exclusive Discord server where we talk about chess and life improvement each day);

- Files (Lichess studies of analyzed chess games, and weekly homework);

- Simple Chess Improvement In 90 Days course (step-by-step process of how to progressively master the key chess skills that determine your results);

- 5 hours of live group training from me, GM Max Illingworth (from Friday to Sunday for US students, Saturday to Monday for Asian/Oceania students) on each of the 3 steps I mentioned above.

Our Invitation

We’d love to have you in the program, because every day you wait is a day you stay stuck spinning your wheels, hoping the ‘magic pill’ offered by someone else works this time, and lacking the support and the process that leads to long-term results…if you push past the initial discomfort that most never overcome.

As Mark Zuckerberg once said, ‘the greatest risk of all is never taking any risks’.

You know what happens if you don’t change anything – so why not try something backed by science, research and over 20 years of experience?

At the end of the day, you need a coach, because you can’t see yourself in chess as well as a coach can – but a great coach can shorten your trial-and-error and bring out the answers within you, with the right process.

You’ve spent enough time trying to figure it out on your own. Let’s condense decades of experience into months, and follow the process that works over the long-term – together.
